Questions, Questions, Questions: The WordPress Community Experiment

Last December I asked a set of seven questions to the WordPress community and invited anyone and everyone to participate. The response that I received was incredible, and the resulting answers gave me a small insight into the blogging world and it’s members.

Since then, my following has tripled, I have received nearly A QUARTER OF A MILLION views (I still can’t believe that) and over the last eight months I have ‘met’ and formed small relationships with lots of wonderful people, so I thought it would be a nice idea to do this experiment again. It isn’t a blog party, so please don’t leave links to your general posts, but it (if enough people participate) will provide a great opportunity for bloggers to meet new people who share similar interests. You don’t have to follow this blog, or have a lot of blogging experience to participate.

Here’s how it works:

Answer the questions below, either in your own post (link it back to this one) or in the comment section below. They can be as short or as detailed as you like.

The post will remain open for the next three days, during which I will compile all the answers. Any answers you provide will be directly linked to your blog, and I will include examples of everybody’s answers in the follow up post.

  2. 1. How did you create the title for your blog?

    I thought of two iconic things from where I come from and where I live now ie Scotland and New Zealand, hence Thistles and Kiwis

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?

    Think of an audience and don’t expect it to grow the way you think it will.

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?

    I think I saw a ghost once.

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?

    Thank you when I wasn’t expecting it.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?

    My home town the year I was born.

    6. If you had to pick a new first name, what would you choose?

    Katherine – it was the second choice my parents had for me.

    7. If you were a B Movie, what would it be called?

    A comedy B Movie – Tea Time Frolics – starring most of the old Carry On crew 🙂

    1. How did you create the title for your blog? I had the pseudonym Ivy Mosquito for other purpose and I wanted to connect the two because it was easier. Also, I really didn’t know how to name my blog so I don’t regret it few weeks later. I can still change my header, which I do, so it’s all good. 🙂 Ivy from my nickname and Mosquito because I’m allergic to them. So what better thing to do than to put the thing you hate in your blog title lol 😀 It has really nothing to do with content on it. I aspire to inspire by sharing my world, thoughts about life, love, self-esteem, respect, dealing with hard times and being creative in many areas.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers? Participate, participate, participate. In whatever you like and where your preferences go, from Weekly Photo Challenges, Daily ones, Writing ones, all sorts of challenges other bloggers do… You will find benefits are triple, you craft your talent and things you are passionate about, you meet other people who are interested in same stuff and others see your work. 🙂

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had? In blogging world? Or in general? If we are talking in blogging world, nothing drastic. If we’re talking about real life, well… We don’t have all day to do this 😀

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you? The best thing? I don’t know… There are many things people say or write to me that bring smile to my face, a huge one. I feel blessed on my blog, I really do. I remember comments saying that I made their day, that I inspire them, that it’s a miracle they read my post today, that I’m inspirational (something I am trying to do with my blog), that I am very smart and strong and beautiful and amazing and kind… Probably the best thing is that a person who I valuate deeply in my offline life told me that I have a wisdom and knowledge with my 26 years that most of people would not have or understand in their whole life (because of situations I had to go trough and still am going trough). That was big. And my love telling me that he loves me and is not going anywhere.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit? Honestly, I live for now. I can find flaws in any time in past and I don’t know how future will look like and I don’t want to know… One thing comes to my mind and I am not the believer Church wants of Christians to be… Birth of Jesus Christ. Or three days after his death. I really really want to know what happened and how.

    7.If you were a B Movie, what would it be called? What’s a B Movie?
    I hope I get this right… I will assume that that is a regular movie. Ok, i Googled it. I’m ready.

  7. 1. My nickname as a child has been bighead because I have a huge head. Now I know that I have way too many thoughts inside of my bighead as a result I named my blog “thoughts of a bighead.

    2. Don’t be afraid to try new stuff out with your blog in terms of lay out to content. Experiment!

    3. I can’t answer this question! So many to choose from! Mmm, I was 16 and some random guy proposed to me at the library. He also asked me if he could meet my father to ask for my hand in marriage. I just looked him up and down and walked away. Btw he wasn’t joking …

    4. At the end of the day it’s your decision because it’s your life. That is hands down the best advice that has ever been given to me. Because it emphasizes the fact that only you will live with the aftermath. Wht please others if it undermines your sense of happiness? ?

    5. I’m 16 with my mother in q store and I’m buying her a beautiful scarf with my first pay check. I felt so proud that I could do something for her!

  8. 1. How did you create the title for your blog? I came up with the name while talking with people at work. They kept calling me Bitter Ben because of all the complaining I would do at work. They said I should start a blog about all things I was bitter about. The natural extension Ben’s Bitter Blog.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers? Since I didn’t know about categorizing, tagging and the reader at first, I say if you want followers, get those in there, make sure you are reading and following others, making comments and blogging regularly, even if it is just once a week. And make sure it is something that you enjoy writing about.

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had? I once got lost in the mountains and almost died. Is that considered strange?

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you? A young person once told me that I was like the dad they wished they had.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit? I would visit the early 1800’s in Upstate New York around the time that Joseph Smith was starting the Mormon Church.

    6. If you had to pick a new first name, what would you choose? Xavier. I’ve always liked kind of exotic sounding names.

    7. If you were a B Movie, what would it be called? Bitter Ben takes over the World.

  9. Here I go, trying to answer the questions. 1. I created the title to my blog because it represents one of the most difficult areas in teaching, i.e. classroom management.2. One point of advice I’d give to new bloggers is to set up an easy template and be creative in your posts. The more creative you are, the more followers you’ll receive in your area of interest. 3. Strangest experience? Dozens come to mind, i.e. how sick I get while riding a roller coaster (gross), weird insects that live in Florida that I see up close and personal on a daily basis, and, maybe, sitting on a bench and watching so many types of humans that pass me by. 4. The best thing that has happened to me is that someone loved me enough to share that Christ died to take away the punishment for my numerous sins and that I can be “born again” renewed by my Lord’s love for me. 5. A time machine? I think I’d like to see the Garden of Eden and meet Adam and Eve. 6. I absolutely can’t think of any other first names I’d like because I’ve taught so many girls over the past 43 years and probably have memories of all of them. 7. B movie? It would be in black and white and have no theme or story.

    My best friend calls me a blonde.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Make sure you don’t offend anyone, learn to accept criticism, and last but not the least blog about anything and everything you are passionate about 🙂

    Crying in public a year or two back and my parents being asked by total strangers whats wrong with me

    I hastily tried to find a good one when I created my blog after a night out.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Be slow but steady and check out other blogs.

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?
    There are many. First Thing that’s crossing my mind: Some woman in Bangladesh tried to
    push and slap me for not giving her money.

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?
    Easy: “I love you!”

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?
    Middle Europe at the end of the last Ice Age, right after the eruption of the Laacher See
    volcano (Germany) 12900 years ago.

    6. If you had to pick a new first name, what would you choose?
    Laura

    The girl who went down the street and came back from a world trip.

  17. 1. Just my name, because my blog reflects my personality.
    2. Am already about to publish a blog. Regularity, novelty and substance are the three key words which appeal to me.
    3. Out of the blue, someone deciding to reblog a post of mine!
    4. That they find my posts inspiring.
    5. The time when righteousness ruled the world, when product was more important than the packaging!
    6. Am happy with what I have.
    7. Decent people also succeed.

    Its my initials and my mission 🙂 simple…

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Clear short paragraphs and i tend to skip entries over 350 words mostly because i dont have the time… although if they do intrigue me, i will come back later.

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?
    The day my Father in Law asked me to do him a manicure and pedicure. He had never had one and saw me doing my own. It felt a bit odd and it did take me aback when he asked. He passed away that night, a heart attack in his sleep. I always wondered if he ‘knew’…

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?
    When my husband told me he loved me.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?
    I would visit the North Pole to experience the BESt light show in the world! The Aurora Borealis.

    6. If you had to pick a new first name, what would you choose?
    I wouldnt change mine for the world.

    7. If you were a B Movie, what would it be called?

    The Bloke came up with the name as I said I wanted something the opposite of a girly chick flick sounding name. He took it literally. .

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Choose your blog name carefully!

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?
    I saw a man flying around up right in the sky but it wasn’t a bloon. My mate saw it as well.

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?
    I’m so glad that your in my life.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?
    I’d visit me the day before I’m starting high-school and I’d tell myself not to take shit off anyone. That would alter my personal history greatly!

    My first blog ended up being the first part of my email address as I had no idea what I was doing!
    The second name derived from my purpose for opening the blog.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Ask questions of other bloggers first! Most of us are nice people and will take the time to help.

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?
    I stopped to give a gal a lift on a cold, wintery night and drove her down the road several miles to her home. Before she got out she offered me sex to pay for the ride! My wife told her to get the hell out of the car. True story!

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?
    That I was the best manager in the company.

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?
    A visit with Thomas Jefferson just after one of the church services he held every sunday in the Capitol Rotunda while he was president.

    6. If you had to pick a new first name, what would you choose?
    Duke, because of a chance encounter I had with John ‘Duke’ Wayne which ended with him asking me to wear his nickname as a thank you for a service I was able to render him.

    A.K. Andrew – Writer’s Notebook …Writers are notorious for having their little black books with them at all times. I do.
    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    The one bit of advice I would say is to both leave comments on other peoples blogs & reciprocate comments left on your own blog posts to build relationships with other bloggers. It’s a great community.
    3. Strangest Experience.
    Watching Patti Smith in concert back in the day, realizing, Mick Jones from the Clash was standing behind me.

    1. How did you create the title for your blog?
    http:// misteriorpess.com — It is also the name of our indie press; my partner and I chose misterio because we write and publish mysteries. It’s the Spanish word for mystery. My partner added the tag line “Killer Fiction” to the blog title. Killer, of course, has a delightful double meaning here.

    2. What’s the one bit of blogging advice you would give to new bloggers?
    Be funny!

    3. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had?
    Being told by my third grade teacher that I would never get anything but C’s in English (Ha! Showed her!)

    4. What is the best thing that anybody has ever said to you?
    An email out of nowhere from a stranger saying “I love your books.”

    5. When presented with a time machine, which one place and time would you visit?
    Most definitely pioneer days. I’d be on one of those Conestoga wagons heading off for new adventures out West.

    I like my first name but not my middle name all that much, If I could change it, I would pick Josephine.

    Hmmm, Revenge of the Online Solitaire Nerds. I can’t imagine anyone making even a grade B movie about me. My life is pretty boring; that’s why I write about imaginary people with exciting lives.
