This is the view from the harbour, just outside the cottage. Gorgeous.
Those of you who have been following the blog over the last few days will know that The Bloke and I are in Scotland on a long overdue holiday. We’re staying in the beautiful little fishing village of Johnshaven, about 30 miles south of Aberdeen, and we’ve been incredibly lucky to find Creel Cottage as our accommodation for the week.

The interior of the cottage
Creel Cottage is owned and managed by Matthew and Naomi, a genuinely lovely couple who have updated the building and now offer the opportunity for people to stay there (at a ridiculously reasonable price) at any time of year. It’s dog friendly, has a fully fitted kitchen (complete with washing machine and dishwasher) and bathroom, full Sky TV (hello, Game of Thrones and Supergirl!), unlimited wi-fi and the most incredible set of views as it is practically on the seafront.
I particularly love Matthew and Naomi’s no-nonsense attitude to advertising the cottage:
Doing Things Differently
We contacted one of the major national cottage companies who visited Creel Cottage and provided a pricing structure that ranged from £325pw all the way up to £540pw. We thought that this would potentially lead to the cottage being empty and in turn less money being spent in local businesses.
Our pricing for the next 12 months is simple:
1st April to 31st October is £350 per week
1st November to 31st March is £250 per week.
We don’t charge for dogs (as long as we get to throw a tennis ball for them) and we aren’t putting the price up for Christmas.
A £100 deposit is required to confirm a booking with the balance due 8 weeks before arrival. We do operate a small deposit policy to cover any unforeseen accidents but this will be refunded in full providing no damage is found at checkout.
We’d much rather the cottage is let for the maximum amount of weeks and contributing to the local economy. This also eases our guilt about turning a cottage within our village into a holiday home!
It’s absolutely perfect for couples, small families and newlyweds (and in our case, newly engaged! Yes, it’s going to be a while before I get tired of saying that!). We fell in love with it the minute we arrived – it’s spotlessly clean and we were given a lovely welcome, along with lots of information about the local area and attractions.

Johnshaven
Johnshaven is an incredibly quiet and friendly village, with a lobster harbour directly opposite the cottage, a pub/hotel that serves the most incredible food (yes, I can vouch for it after trying half the menu already), a convenience store and even a craft shop sporting the most beautiful handmade items.
I love everything about it – I love the people, the calm and laid back atmosphere, and most of all, I love the fact that I wake up every morning to an incredible view of the sea…
Can’t get much better than that!
You can find Creel Cottage on their Facebook page here
I would advise contacting them sooner than later – they’re becoming booked up extremely fast!
Disclaimer: The Bloke and I were given a discount on our stay, but were given no input into this or any other post and are under no obligation to provide a positive review at any time.
Oh, this is the cottage! Glad to hear it really is as lovely as it looks. Enjoy your break (and newly engaged status) 🙂
I couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay! I think you and the family would love it – there’s a sofa bed in the living room for the gorgeous girl!
Sounds just perfect, and I love the way you’ve described the village as well – sounds like my kind of place. Now need to go chat with hubby… 🙂
Haha! honestly, it’s just your sort of place, and for the price it’s an absolute bargain!
Well, the fact that it’s a bargain makes it my sort of place too 🙂 I showed the details to hubby – now to work out some potential dates…
Go via the Facebook page and they’ll get back to you really quickly – lovely people and very accommodating!
Thanks, Suzie, will do 🙂 And yay! can I just say again how pleased I am for you? 🙂
Thank you my lovely haha!
What a fantastic attitude to have, to think of the whole community rather than jsut their own pocket. Sure they will be fully booked now that you have told the whole blogosphere Suzie 😉
Thanks Joy – I hope so (although, it’s getting booked up pretty fast as it is via its Facebook page)
Nice 🙂
It’s beautiful – you should get yourself up here Richard!
I wish. I’ve been to Aviemore and that’s lovely too.
I’ve never been there – I’ll have a look!
Well worth it. 😄
Looks amazing. I sometimes take for granted that places like this are on my doorstep 🙂
Have you ever been Steve?
Yeah I almost got beamed up to a spaceship when I was there though https://steve-says.net/2013/11/07/a-word-a-week-challenge-behind/
Greg is stood on the spot where The Bloke proposed haha!
Haha really? It was a really nice day that day.
Yeah! Get off my cliff Greg!!! Mine!
Haha, what’s tomorrow’s plan then?
Waterfall, abandoned castle, then St. Cyrus I think?
A booking at an ideal cottage turned into the ideal vacation with a beautiful ring and an enduring promise to boot. Good fortune to those who deserve it.
Absolutely! I couldn’t have asked for anything more Sharon – it was perfect!
Ooo, this is someplace I would book immediately if we were on the other side of the pond! What is around there?
Beaches, castles, puffins and seals, little towns, forests… It’s beautiful!
How wonderful, my grandfather was from Scotland and I have always wanted to visit there… Now I want to visit even more! Sounds divine! DAF ~ Cathi
You really should my lovely – I love it here! Definitely somewhere that I would like to visit again!
I hope you enjoy your break, I used to live a couple of villages down from there and miss the view. Make sure you go to St Cyrus beach, and there’s a fruit farm just before you reach Montrose that does great strawberry tarts (or it did four years ago, I haven’t made it there since we moved back).
Ooh we went to St Cyrus today and we walked from the nature reserve to the waterfall! Which village did you live in? Did you ever go to the Den of Finella?
I lived in Inverbervie for a couple of years. Yes I have been to the Den of Finella, but I never realised it was called that until I Googled it just now!
I’m sooooooo jealous, we couldn’t find a way to get there!
This looks absolutely gorgeous and those views are stunning! Great that they allow dogs there are well. 🙂
They have two dogs of their own so they’re really dog-friendly! It’s really beautiful here!
It really looks it. I am working on Mr Grump! 🙂
Oh it looks so beautiful! Just a little bit too far away for me but Scotland is for sure on my travel list…
Totally worth it! I’ve had a brilliant time!
