coffee and coversationIf we were having coffee, I would tell you that it is an absolutely glorious day here. The sun is shining, there isn’t a cloud in the sky and it’s beautifully hot – the start of what is predicted to be another heatwave. Good. I love the sun – we seem to spend months on end in the cold, rain and dark in the UK, so any change in the weather is always welcome (although I know that after a few days there will be a number of miserable people who have had enough – us Brits always like to complain about something!). I’ve taken the opportunity to appreciate it already this morning by going for a walk, the cats are indulging in a lazy snooze in the sun and The Bloke has taken himself off to one of the main parks in the city with his camera to go and bother some squirrels. I have given him the nickname of ‘Walker the Squirrel Stalker’ – he has some amazing pictures of them… in their hundreds…

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’ve had a fabulous week – one that I can look back on with a genuine smile.

A little while ago, I attended an event at Farringdon and Forbes, an independent fragrance and home gifting store situated in Resorts World next to the NEC. As well as being treated to beautiful canapes and their fabulous products, we were offered the chance to win an amazing prize, donated by various businesses within the complex, for the best blog post. This week, I discovered that I had won the competition! My prize is amazing – I have won a Spa Day for two at the Santai Spa, an Asian High Tea experience for two at the Robata Bar and Grill at the Genting Hotel, a two-course meal for two at the Bottega Prosecco Bar and a collection of beautiful products from Farringdon and Forbes. I’m ecstatic, and am looking forward to booking in for the different experiences over the next few weeks…

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I went to a cocktail-making masterclass and Benefit makeover at Be At One Bar in Birmingham on Wednesday. Cocktails and make-up in one night? Ooh, go on then! We were treated to an awesome evening of cocktail demonstrations by the lovely Joe, who also gave us a genuinely interesting history of how the cocktail developed and the equipment used by mixologists. Even better, after he had made a mojito (my favourite drink), we got the chance to try out our own mixing skills, and I had a great time making a Porn Star Martini (what else!) with assistance from the smiley Eva and practising my ‘shake face.’ Afterwards, I was given some assistance with my eyebrows by the Benefit team, who showed me what I should and shouldn’t be doing when structuring my eyebrow shape to suit my face. Emma was incredibly patient with me (and by this point I was a little bit squiffy to say the least) and I managed to purchase the new for an amazing £3.50…

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’ve been hooked on the Olympics. I missed a lot of it in 2012 as I was on holiday in Naples and they didn’t do much coverage of the British teams, and I’ve been so proud of all our athletes. I’ve watched everything I possibly can – judo, gymnastics (where I saw Simone Biles perform for the first time… wow – how incredible she is!), rowing, rugby sevens, tennis, kayaking, table tennis, swimming, fencing, diving… amazing. I’m looking forward to the start of the athletics too! It’s been such an exciting games so far!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that the week has been filled with friends – I visited my friend who is recovering from an operation, explored another’s beautiful new house, had another pop round (while I was still in my jammies) with a wedding invitation, and was ridiculously jealous while drinking a cider of another’s stories of her recent adventures in Las Vegas (I was bunnysitting for her while she was away) when we met up in the pub after she returned home. How lucky I am!

There’s lots of exciting things coming up over the next few weeks too, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you!

  4. Congrats on the blogging prize. Not surprised as you write so well.
    I’ve been enjoying the Olympics too. Australia topped the medal tally for a day and I enjoyed that while it lasted. I took a few photos for the blog from the TV set and had a surprising result, where gold medalist Mack Horton ended up ghosted by the Australian flag. Quite poignant.

    By the way, on the violin front, did I tell you that my daughter is playing in a mass string school performance at Sydney Opera House? It’s in a few weeks. I can’t wait and yet it’s going to be a huge effort getting in there etc. School provides so many fabulous opportunities.

    • Ooh that’s amazing Rowena! I have a friend that is recovering from a major op and she has started ballet too – she loves it! Congrats to your daughter too – you must be so proud!

      • I hope your friend is okay. The ballet will do her good. A friend of mine is going to have a second back op this week. Ouch!
        Am very proud of my daughter but I get so frustrated at times with trying to get practice done and turning up for lessons. Not a lot of glory in being the support crew. I think there was part of me thinking that if she wasn’t going to get to ballet, I would.
        To be fair, she hasn’t been well and Friday afternoons aren’t great for ballet. She’s exhausted.
        I’m sure you know all about this from the teacher’s perspective.

      • My daughter’s violin teacher has worked miracles with her. She is so lovely and talks their language and yet is firm.
        I forget to practice.
        I don’t have that trouble with writing. I forget to stop.

      • Not it you’re my husband. BTW, we’re oon the final countdown to the Opera House performance. I hate all these details and go into event manager mode. Had a mad search for a black skirt today when she usually wears pants and has pants but that would’ve involve have me running round like a headless chook!

  8. If we were having coffee, I would immediately hug you and squeal with delight over you winning… of course you did! Obviously, these people were wise enough to recognize good writing… Then I would want to know all the little details of the fun you have had that you didn’t mention in this post… because, I am nosey like that. I would ask about the Bloke and we would talk about his squirrel love… I can send a few million from our yard over if he would like. I would want to know about wedding plans and then you would realize that I am just a boring person with nothing exciting going on with her life besides watching all sorts of weird mushrooms growing in her yard from all the rain we have had… that’s it from me… watching fungus among us!!! ❤ hope you continue to have weeks filled with fun, laughter, food, drinks and friends.
