Baywatch, a CV Meltdown and a Busy Week

I always wake up with the intention of writing a post, but it seems that of late it hasn’t happened. It has been a busy, exciting, tiring and frustrating time, and I’ve had to focus daily on self-care activities and mindfulness in order to keep myself together at times.

The view of Yeovil

Half-term week was one of the best I have had in a while. I attended my friend’s wedding, which was absolutely perfect, and I’m delighted for her that everything went so beautifully. It was also an extra-enjoyable time for The Bloke and I for the opportunity that it provided to have an extended break away from home for a few days. As the wedding was an almost three hour drive away, we decided that it would make more sense to stay overnight in a hotel in Yeovil (that I will refer to as ‘The Town Where the Internet Goes to Die – I had no signal whatsover for the majority of the time) to avoid potential traffic chaos on the motorway and we ended up having an impromptu date day and night. We spent the afternoon checking out the shops and churches, we climbed an enormous hill to get a beautiful view of the town and the weather was lovely. The hotel was opposite a retail park and cinema complex, so in the evening we went to watch Baywatch. It turned out to be surprisingly hilarious – quite similar to the humour used in 21 Jump Street – and I must admit that the fact that Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron spent a large percentage of it with their shirts off was more than an added bonus… We then went for an AWFUL meal at the Frankie and Benny’s restaurant next to it that was so bad my food ended up being refunded. Normally, when we stay in a hotel we are there for the purpose of tourism, so we spend as much time as we can exploring the city that we are staying in. However, as the wedding didn’t start until 1.00pm the next day we had a rare opportunity to just relax – enjoy breakfast, have a hot bath, watch some television and spend a bit of time getting ready, which was lovely.

A Marshmallow Caipirihna

I also had the chance to catch up with some friends that I haven’t seen in a while for cocktails and an italian meal – it’s always nice to be able to hear what they have been getting up to. One has started her own wedding preparations for her ceremony next year, and I think she’s already far more organised than I am! The wedding planning continues – I received my beautiful invitations from Confetti Designs that I am delighted with – and now it seems like things are beginning to fall into place. There’s still a bajillion things to do, but I’m enjoying the process!

I’ve been doing some invigilating and as an added bonus I have been potentially offered an exciting supply opportunity at a brilliant school. However, what I didn’t expect was the problems I would encounter when I sat down to write a CV. It’s been over five years since I did one, and in order to try and find my previous one I went through my old hard drive that contains resources from my previous years as a teacher. What I thought would be a simple process of updating my information turned into a full-blown panic attack when I saw all of my old documents. Horrible memories of feeling stressed and anxious returned, and I felt sick to the point where I physically couldn’t do anything but cry. I felt ridiculous – I’m a reasonably intelligent 35 year old woman with a lot to be thankful for – but at least now I have found a trigger which I know to avoid in the future. I still haven’t written the CV, but I will, and I’ll delete everything from that hard drive too. I haven’t needed it in the last two years and I doubt I will need it in the future…

However, I’m looking forward to this weekend in particular. The Bloke and I will be going to London to attend the third Annual Blogger Bash, during which I will be doing a talk on monetising your blog, which I’m really excited about. The Bloke is going into the city with his camera, and admittedly I’m a little nervous because of the terror attack last week, but we cannot let the actions of the few dictate how we live our lives. I’ll be meeting people that I have been talking to online for years, and I have a guest coming back to Birmingham for a few days with me… Exciting!

And today, I did my bit and voted. I hope everyone else who is able to has done the same. It’s time for a change.

What about you guys? What have you been up to over the last week?

  1. What a week, Suzie! My goodness!! I’m looking forward to hearing all about the Bash, and I’m thinking about you and sending tons of good vibes for a brilliant time! Cher xo P.S. That drink looks AMAZING!!

  2. Horrible how something from the past affects your present for the worse for a short moment. Great that you now know how to fix it! Anxiety is awful!! Have fun at the Bash. I can imagine how many posts will be published šŸ™‚

  3. Wow, I’m exhausted just reading what you’ve been up to!! Can’t wait to see you at the Bash and hear your talk. It’s going to be a fantabulous day! šŸ˜Š

  4. Accidental date day/night due to internet death is a lovely happenstance. Your previous post about the wedding sounded awesome, happy for the couple. Good luck with your CV writing and nailing your job. About 6 months ago I sat down to redo mine and it had been so long, 8 years I think, that it felt like I was writing fiction.

  5. I don’t think I have ever found much signal in the South West. It’s a good place to unplug and relax. šŸ™‚

I’m sorry to hear your CV writing was stressful. I really hope your next experience in schools will be less horrible! Good luck for getting it done and dusted.

  6. Pleased to meet you in person, you are a very motivational woman. Nice blog you have here now you have made me both tired what a week and the bash as well and thirsty *clinks a glass* ‘ cheers my new real friend as opposed to the previous virtual onešŸ¹’

  7. What an exciting time you’ve been having! So glad to hear about your plans and I wish I could hear your talk at the Bash. Maybe you could include it in a post for those of us not able to attend – no pressure! x

  8. Hi Suzie,
I have no doubt the bloggers’ bash was fantastic and you all had a fabulous time meeting, catching up and sharing. Every other year, I’ve been very envious of everyone attending the bash, but this year make no excuses for feeling happy to be on home soil, a little off the beaten track. As you may be aware, two young Australians who were working in London were killed in the latest attack and I think two others were injured. I was over in London for a week as a 22 year old backpacking and remember the fun, the homesickness and how great it was to finally see and be in London for the first time. Initially, I heard quite a fair bit of reassuring talk of the the like of “stay calm and carry on”. Then, our PM changed his tune. They also announced this week that a gaol is being built her for terrorists and suspected terrorists after we had an incident in Melbourne. There’s also a sense of “You do something to remove the threat, then we’ll feel calm. We’re not going to buy the rhetoric anymore.”
Meanwhile, had I been under surveillance last garbage night, I’d be behind bars myself. I’ve been doing a massive clean-up at home over the last couple of months, and I ended up with two and a half bin loads of rubbish. I can get in a second bin run by wheeling our bin across the road for when the truck doubles back. However, I ended up dropping little bag loads down the street. It’s the first time I’ve ever been that desperate and I’m really pleased no one’s tracking me.
    xx Rowena

    • There were a few that cancelled because of the attacks and I thought that was a shame – London is a safe and beautiful place and it seems a shame that some are now dubious about going…
