Blog of the Day: Lorna from Gin & Lemonade

Ever wondered what to do when the power is out?

Meet Lorna! She’s the creator of Gin & Lemonade and a prolific blogger.

I’ve written about Gin and Lemonade before – Lorna has become well-known within the blogging community and I’ve watched her blog (and content) grow and evolve enormously within the last few years, particularly as she moved over from dot com to a new self-hosted blog.

Lorna lives in Skye, writes, reads and lives quite happily with her husband, their daughter and lots of books. She’s in her 30’s, is a wife, a mother, and is a wheelchair-user. She explains more in her rather epic ‘About’ page:

Back then I had just moved in with my boyfriend (Sarge), and I wanted to write from the perspective of a youngish person with CP in a relationship and living in not the most accessible city in the world.

And for added interestingness, I was an American living in Scotland for a really long time, with an accent that betrayed all my years here. To bring you up to speed, Sarge has always been Neil and we got married in 2013.  Our daughter Isla was born in 2014, and we still call her Zerbert.  Sometimes.

And these days, the three of us live in a medium-sized house in the country.   I miss the city.  But missing places and people is not a new concept for me.

I’m still American and my accent is still weird.

I used to drive a sports chair.  Now I have a minivan chair.

For a few years now I’ve thought, I live my life, so I don’t have to write about it.  But stuff keeps happening.  And I want to write about it.

This blog is about me. And my life. The fact that I use a wheelchair and live in not the most accessible city in the world is only one part of it.  Or is that two parts?  I was never good at Math. That’s another part.

And yes, I drink Gin & Lemonade. And other things. Like coffee. But never at the same time. Gin, lemonade and coffee would be too much. Or would it?

I’m very likely to be drinking coffee while writing blog posts. That can be taken as a warning, or as fact.

I’ve been a fan of Gin & Lemonade for a while and had the pleasure of meeting her and her husband in person at the Annual Bloggers Bash in 2018. Gin and Lemonade is a lifestyle blog – Lorna writes in a conversational style that appeals to any reader – and especially over recent years she has openly discussed all sorts of topics and events within her life, travel, the hilarious interactions she has with her (equally witty) growing daughter, living with her disability and the issues she has to overcome with lack of accessibility as a wheelchair user, and more recently has started to discuss her favourite books and created a regular set of writing prompts that encourages bloggers to participate in.

In her own words – her husband thinks that she needs to make a spreadsheet to keep track of everything that she talks about. To my knowledge, she hasn’t yet. I agree – life is too short for spreadsheets…

Her disability – related blogs are proving to be incredibly popular in particular.
