Daily Gratitude Challenge Day 20: Risks

In an effort to inject some positivity into my daily mindset and the online world I have created a Daily Gratitude Challenge and I am inviting everyone to participate. If you have missed my introductory post that explains the challenge and maps out the daily post schedule, visit here.

Daily Gratitude Challenge What risks are you grateful for taking

Day 20 of the Daily Gratitude Challenge is all about risks you are grateful for taking.

Risks I Am Grateful for Taking

I’m not a massive risk-taker as such. I like to be spontaneous, but with big decisions I need to take my time and plan first.

However, I have taken two big risks that have shaped the course of my future. Both of those risks have been decisions about my job.

The first was when I had just graduated. I was nervous about being able to get a job and so applied for a position doing telecommunications (essentially, cold-calling). On the day of the interview I knew that it wasn’t what I wanted, and had to go through an extensive series of activites with about 15 other people, building things from Meccano as part of a team, answering nonsensical questions about what animal I am etc, and at the end was told that I had got the job and was given a start-date. About ten days before I was due to begin, I saw an advert in the paper for a Learning Mentor in a secondary school. I had no idea what a learning mentor was, but the job description looked interesting, and so I applied. I received an interview date, which happened to be on the day I was due to start the telecommunications job. This involved a massive risk: should I risk going for an interview for a job that I wasn’t guaranteed and lose the job I had already secured? I decided that it was worth it. I called the agency and was blacklisted, went for the interview… and got the job. This lead to becoming a teacher a few years later.

The second was to quit teaching and start my own social media business. It was an enormous risk – I was in a secure, financially stable position in a school with a pension, and had no guaranteed income from what I planned to do. Eventually, I did it – I quit my job without another one to go to and the risk (so far, at least) has paid off.

What about you guys? What risks are you grateful to have taken?
