Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

New Year’s Eve was both a good and sad day. The Bloke and I had a buffet of party food and watched The Proposal, only to see the announcement a few hours later that Betty White had passed away. I was genuinely gutted about it – I think the reason why we watched the film was because I had seen Ryan Reynold’s tweet a few days before and we realised we hadn’t watched the film in ages, and it was a genuine shock when we checked our social media afterwards. Such a sad loss and an incredible woman.

We stayed up until just after midnight to watch the fireworks from London. It was a different format this year, with the fireworks moved from the London Eye to the Shard, Millennium Bridge and the Old Royal Naval College (to prevent crowds), a drone display, a lovely poem from actor Giles Terera and a rather lacklustre choir at Shakespeare’s Globe singing ABBA songs, which made no sense. While the general consensus on social media was extremely negative, I’m undecided about it. It’s not like we’re not capable of putting on a great show – the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games was truly spectacular – but I understood why they did it this way and felt that this rather symbolised where we are as a society at the minute, a bit muted and scaled down. Of course, it’s not like they’re going to make everyone happy – a massive display would have undoubtedly resulted in comments about money wasted etc, but this wasn’t necessarily a good alternative. We went to bed feeling a little flat.

Over the last few years I have grown to love New Year’s Day. Despite the fact that it is just 24 hours there is an overwhelming sense of excitement and hope for the year to come and I often hit the ground running with ideas of everything I want to do and my goals for the year.

I started 2021 thinking that I would work one day at a time, but quickly managed to map out a whole bunch of goals and targets, most of which I didn’t achieve. Instead, this year I have decided to have a single goal, which is purely financial. Any other little goals that I work towards will feed into that, which will allow me to stay focused on the end game rather than wanting to do ALL THE THINGS and failing spectacularly.

I need something new to sink my teeth into, so over January I have am going to kick-start my goal with a no spend challenge. It’s the perfect time of year to do it – January is the least-busy month of the year for me when it comes to birthdays, celebrations and events and work is often at it’s busiest. I’m quite excited about it, taking it day bay day and recording my progress as I go along.

I hope you all have a wonderful new year!

  3. I always watch the London New Year’s celebration. I agree on all counts. (Though the drones were pretty awesome.) Here’s to all your dreams coming true. I’m sure you’ll accomplish your goals. I don’t make resolutions and don’t really map out goals, though I should, but instead choose a One Word for the year. That post is a bit late. Perhaps tomorrow or Wednesday. Eh, I’ve got a bit. 😉
I love an uncluttered space, which I’ve managed, and a No Spend Challenge sounds lovely for keeping a decluttered space…well…decluttered. Happy New Year! 🥳🎉💃🏻
