Motherly Love – Skincare for Pregnancy and Beyond

imageA little while ago I told you that my youngest sister is pregnant with the first grandchild in the family. She’s currently at 26 weeks, and thankfully both mum and baby are doing well.

I was delighted when I was contacted by Motherly Love, a company that specialises in oils for pregnancy and beyond. Founded and created by Jan, a mother, grandmother, midwife and nurse of over 40 years, all of the oils contain natural products and are made in the UK and the packaging is 100% recyclable. Baby Talk

imageI have a very small family of four, just consisting of my mum, two younger sisters and I, with no extended relatives. To say that relationships have been strained over the years is an understatement, but I’m pleased that over more recent times we’ve been able to repair our connections somewhat and are now at the point where we can all get together, have a great time and enjoy being in each other’s company. Both sisters are in relationships with good men – my youngest sister married my brother-in-law two years ago and my middle sis lives with her boyfriend – and this has been a welcome addition to the dynamics of four, strong-minded women.

Five months ago, I received a phone call from the youngest sis… She’d discovered that she was pregnant, which she was delighted about as her and my brother-in-law had been trying for a while. I asked her how far along she was, and her answer made me smile. She was only four weeks gone.

While it’s standard for most people to wait for three months before telling anyone, my sis and I are terrible at keeping things to ourselves if we’re excited about something, so she rang us almost as soon as she had found out. Continue reading

Blog of the Day: Cookie Crumbs

Cookie Crumbs (and a beautiful picture too!)

Meet Tasha!

Tasha is the creator and owner of Cookie Crumbs, a blog which documents her life as a wife, mother and creative soul.

Cookie Crumbs is new to Suzie Speaks, but I instantly loved the design and the tag line: ‘Welcome to my mind. Please excuse the mess, I haven’t had time to clean‘. Tasha explains her story in her About Page:

My family and I live in Iowa, where I was born and raised.  Since the birth of our daughter, Addie, I felt the struggle between being a full-time working mother and just wanting to be home with her.  I have gone from a working mom to a SAHM and back to a working mom.  Each poses it’s own set of struggles and joys… Continue reading

Social Media: When Teachers Become The Targets

It was reported in the news today that the number of teachers facing abuse via social media has more than doubled over the last year, with staff being subjected to personal and professional insults and pictures and videos of them being uploaded without their consent. Worse still, 40% of this online abuse came from parents.

Only two days ago, a picture of a very attractive maths teacher went viral – one of his students at UCL had discovered that he also worked as a model and the student had taken a picture in the classroom and uploaded it to his social media sites. It seemed to be taken in a light-hearted manner and jokes were being made about suddenly developing an interest in algebra, but I was really annoyed on his behalf. The poor teacher may have been absolutely mortified. The question I asked that day to my Facebook friends was this: Continue reading

When Parents Get It Right

Being childless, I cannot claim to know how difficult being a parent is, but I have found on many occasions that I have become agitated by the lack of consideration and discipline that children and young teenagers demonstrate when are out in public, and working with teenagers for nearly ten years, I have witnessed numerous examples where parents have made excuses for their children, rather than addressing poor behaviour that the child should have been made accountable for. While I don’t believe that any children are bad, I have judgements in the past, whether rightly or wrongly, when I have observed parents making these excuses. One of my biggest annoyances is the disruption that is frequently caused by children and teenagers when attempting to watch a movie at the cinema, and I have written about this on several occasions.

However, a story appeared on my Facebook feed this morning that made me want to punch the air and shout a resounding ‘yes!’ when I read it.

On Friday night, Rebecca Boyd took her 12 year-old daughter to see the new Cinderella movie. Her husband had just been made redundant from his job and this would be the last film that they would be able to see for a while, and they were hoping for an enjoyable time.

Unfortunately, (as I have personally experienced on many occasions), their evening was repeatedly disrupted by two teenage girls who were misbehaving throughout – kicking the seats, talking, giggling – and this continued even when Boyd asked them to stop. At the end of the movie, Boyd sent her daughter to the car and spoke to the teens outside the cinema, explaining how their behaviour affects others and her husband’s situation.

In an interview given with Yahoo!Parenting, Boyd explained that she didn’t blame the teens parents, despite being annoyed by the girls behaviour.

However, the teens mother was furious… at her children. The girls were at the movie with their brother, who told their mom everything. Kyesha Smith Wood, whose daughter and step-daughter were the teens who has caused the trouble posted this to Facebook:

The post went viral, and the comments that Wood received were hugely positive for making her children accountable for their actions.

The post eventually made it to Boyd, who was touched by the response and after connecting over Facebook they hit it off. Since then, both women have been interviewed on numerous occasions, and have demonstrated the upmost respect for each other. Wood told AL.com “A lot of times people get nervous about saying something to a stranger’s kids. We as a community need to hear this, that there are parents out there who still believe in old-fashioned methods.”

And the teens? In an interview with ABC 33/40, Wood explained that they were embarrassed.”They’re humiliated, but that’s ok. I told them, ‘you know what? You’re never going to do it again.’ ”

Both women should be absolutely applauded for their handling of the situation, for supporting each other as parents and for making the girls accountable for their actions. With parents like these, I’m sure that all of their children will grow up to be outstanding young people.

Bravo!

What do you think? As a parent, would you react in the same way?

Twelve Childhood Things That I Miss

tumblr_m5n3knmhcb1qfi7g6

After reading an interview with British comedian Sarah Millican (she’s fabulous, check her out @SarahMillican75) in which she discussed things from childhood that she missed being able to do, I thought that I would compile a list of my own.

1. During hot summer days, putting on a swimming costume and sitting in a paddling pool in the back garden. My neighbours would think that I’m a little strange if I did this now…

2. Making my own radio broadcasts. I had an old tape recorder that had a microphone and I would record myself interviewing famous people. I would then tape the Top 40 songs from the Singles Chart, stopping it before the DJ started to speak over it.

3. Being able to innocently read this (one of my favourite childhood books) without sniggering to myself.

4. Watching episodes of Saved By The Bell during the holidays, and arguing with my sisters as to who Zack would ask out first.

5. Fastening my coat around my neck to resemble a cape and running around the playground.

6. Being able to do a cartwheel and a somersault. If I were to attempt these now I would need to be placed in traction afterwards.

7. Being able to watch He-Man without questioning his sexuality (not that it matters, I’m just distracted now by Adam’s pink tights).

8. Playing sports for an entire day without the fear that every muscle in my body will shrivel up and die the next day in protest.

9. My mother’s Sunday roast dinners. Mine are pretty awesome, but they still don’t compare.

10. Eating the greatest chocolate bar of all time: Cadbury’s Secret. Chocolate marshmallow wrapped in strands of chocolate. I miss them.

11. Playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive. It’s the only computer game I’ve ever completed.

12. Getting photographs back from the processing store after excitedly waiting for several hours and being delighted with the results, even though my fingers were in most of the pictures.

What about you guys? Is there anything that you miss doing from your childhood?

I’m So Excited!

Image

In the last two hours a post that I wrote a few days ago has gone nuts on Facebook. I wanted to submit this to the ‘Blog Her’ awards so after a few days deliberation I posted it to my personal Facebook page, asking my friends to share it around and tell me that they thought. I’ve never done this before… I started my blog last April and only a handful of people knew I had one…

The response has been amazing – it has been viewed over 600 times and shared over 200 in this short amount of time and still seems to be going!

https://suzie81.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/why-being-a-stay-at-home-parent-is-the-toughest-job-in-the-world-written-by-someone-without-children/

So, to continue this rather fabulous moment and to finish what has been an incredible weekend I am posting the link again. Feel free to reblog, share on Facebook and Twitter and join in the fun! As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the matter!

Note: Since I have woken up this morning it has continued to be shared… It has been viewed over 1,000 times since last night and the numbers are rising again! Wow!

Why Being a Stay At Home Parent is the Toughest Job in the World, Written by Someone Without Children

I’m going to start this post by making a statement that some may not like.

I don’t like young children.

I’ve never been a maternal person. I come from a small family of four, with no additional relatives and so I wasn’t brought up with any younger children other than my two sisters. As I started to reach my 30’s I expected to feel the desire to become a mother that some of my friends claimed that they felt, but to this very day I have yet to feel anything but annoyance.

They’re everywhere.

While others around me seem to turn mushy when presented with a new baby, proclaiming how ‘beautiful’ it is, I am simply reminded of the ‘Cabbage Patch Kids’ that I had when I was little. Regardless of where I am and what I am doing, it always seems to be accompanied by a screaming child and it’s frustrated parents – shopping, restaurants, public transport, even the cinema… I have lost count of the amount of times my ankles have been battered by a pushchair or I have been woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of next door’s toddler having some sort of tantrum (although they’re lovely so I don’t actually mind)… Continue reading

January Round-Up: My Favourite Posts and a Party!!

January has been one of my most productive blogging months since I started Suzie81 last April. There are three posts that I am particularly proud of and so as part of the the ‘Zero to Hero’ Challenge I thought I would share them again with you in case you may have missed them. You can see them by clicking on the link or the accompanying picture. As always, I’d love to know what you think!

However, as it is the weekend, I’ve decided to turn this into a Blog Party that you can all join in!

23 Things You Should Actually Do Before You’re 23

23 Things You Should Actually Do Before You’re 23 was written on the January 3rd, in response to a rather controversial Freshly Pressed post that went viral. Since then it has been viewed several thousand times, it has been reblogged several times and has been shared more than any other post I’ve created on Facebook and Twitter.

The focus of the post is about things that you could possibly achieve before the age of 23. I’ve tried to keep it as balanced as possible and avoid judgement.

Blogging Worries and Paranoia

Blogging Worries and Paranoia: Are We Limiting Ourselves? was created on January 20th. This has also received a good response and I’ve had some really great discussions with various people about some of the subject content.

The general idea of the post was to highlight the worries that bloggers may have when writing something new, and discussing the idea of holding back from saying what we actually think to avoid offending others. This has been something that has bothered me for a while, and I was relieved to find that lots of others felt the same way.

Why We Should All Love Justin Bieber

Why We Should All Love Justin Bieber was written yesterday in response to the ridiculous outpouring of love for the train-wreck that is Justin Bieber at the minute. I normally try and stay away from controversial subjects, but I got increasing frustrated with my Twitter feed being clogged up with news about this moron…

In a ridiculously short space of time this post has started to be shared across Twitter and Facebook and to my relief I haven’t received any Belieber abuse yet, although give it time!!

Instructions for the Blog Party.

Choose your favourite post from your own blog – preferably from January but any post is fine. The subject of the post can be anything you like – blogging, food, parenting, life, travel, thoughts, photography… Note: This should be only one post or it will get sent straight to the ‘spam’ folder and I may not be able to find you for a while.

Paste the link to your post in the comment section of this post.

Enjoy! Relax, pull up a chair, meet new people! Find new blogs, comment on their posts, follow, reblog and share. Let them know that you met them here! This is a really useful way of discovering new blogs, particularly if you are new to the blogging world and when I have participated in similar things I have really enjoyed them!

You don’t have to follow me to participate, you don’t have to be an established blogger – you could have written just a single post – and feel free to invite your friends! While you’re there, check out the winners of my New Year Week 3 Competition – their buttons are in my sidebar!

The party will remain open until this time tomorrow… Have fun!
