Yesterday morning – Saturday on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend – The Bloke and I were awake early. It was a rare day where both of us had the entire day to ourselves, so I suggested that we take advantage of the beautiful weather and go out somewhere.
The conversation about a day-trip to Solihull quickly turned into a trip to Worcester. We got ready and got on the bus…
… and ended up in London.

A large amount of the West Coast mainline and Euston station was closed (thanks, Avanti), but we discovered that there was a direct train from Moor Street to Marylebone, and even better, there was a ‘couples’ same-day return ticket offer that was cheaper than when I usually travel there on my own.
And what a glorious day it was.
After weeks of rain, the sky was blue, the sun was out and surprisingly, aside from the usual touristy spots around the London Eye, it wasn’t nearly as busy as I expected it would be. Over half of the tube service was either suspended or had delays so we walked for miles – taking a stroll along the Thames, exploring little side streets and finding out more about the gorgeous buildings hidden out of sight. When we got to Victoria we visited the impressive Neo-Byzantine style Westminster Cathedral – the largest Catholic church in the UK and the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster.
And of course, no trip to London should be without stopping in at little cafes to try out random foods.
We visited The Biscuiteers – renowned for their beautiful hand-decorated biscuits. The cafe at the back of their shop was cute and perfect for Instagrammers, and we were offered the option to decorate our own biscuits – a fun idea had we had more time. After paying a somewhat extortionate amount for some biscuits, however, I was really disappointed. Yes, they were well decorated, but the biscuits themselves seemed slightly stale and were tasteless, the only flavour coming from the super-sugary icing. Not great, but I’m always happy for a new experience.
Next, we treated ourselves to halloumi bagels from the Chestnut Bakery. This is one of my favourite places for breakfast in Belgravia whenever I visit, and as an extra treat I added an olive hummus side with toasted sourdough. Gorgeous.
And then, I ticked an item off my London foodie bucket list. I FINALLY got the chance to try the Japanese soufflé pancakes at CA.
Yes, my 55 year-old husband stood in a queue outside a very tiny pink cafe so he could sit at a very tiny pink table and watch his idiot wife photograph a pancake…
He’s a very patient man.
So much fun, and by the time we got back to the station both The Bloke and I were exhausted. It was something that we both needed – a gorgeous day of exploring, talking nonsense, lots of laughter and a great time spent with my favourite person.
Happy Easter, everyone, and if you don’t celebrate Easter, Happy Sunday!
