This morning I received a beautiful bunch of flowers from my colleagues at work, along with a lovely card that read ‘Hope you’re feeling better soon.’ It was a lovely gesture and really cheered me up. Consequently, it also got me thinking about the little pleasures that happen in life that make things so much more fun and worthwhile. Here are twenty-one things that make my life better.
1. Lying in a bed that has been made with freshly washed linen at the end of a long day.
2. Sitting around a table with friends and family, enjoying a beautiful meal and each others company.
3. A cuddle on the sofa whilst watching a good film.
4. Driving to work without having to stop at a single red light.
5. Finding a £5 note in your pocket that you didn’t realise you had.
6. An Amaretto Sours cocktail.
7. Receiving an unexpected handwritten letter or card from a friend in the post.
8. My mother’s homemade vegetable pie.
9. Swimming in an open air pool on a hot day.
10. An attractive man, wearing a suit and nice aftershave.
11. A spontaneous and unexpected fabulous night out.
12. Making someone laugh.
13. The expression on somebody’s face when they love a present you’ve given them.
14. A student informing you that they really enjoyed your lesson as they are leaving and genuinely look like they mean it.
15. A pampering session at a spa.
16. A film or book that stays with you for days afterwards.
17. Finding something that you have been looking for over a long period of time… At half price.
18. A sleepy cat that cuddles it’s own tail.
19. Looking at the refrigerator after you’ve just been food shopping.
20. Singing loudly to your favourite song when there is nobody else in the house.
21. Finishing work on Friday, knowing that you don’t need to work over the weekend.
Can you add to this? What are your little pleasures in life?

I’m a big believer in your #7. The book of ‘awesome’ had a bunch of good ones, things like ‘all traffic lights were green on the way home’ that are nice surprises!
It’s only happened to me once, but it’s a great feeling!
And I found a $5 bill in a pocket on the weekend, so I’m happy to be able to relate to your #5 as well!
Haha! Thanks! Hope you spend it wisely!
I have to agree with Stephen there! It’s even better for me because I live in Singapore and I found a £5 note in my jacket pocket 2 weeks ago. With the current exchange rate, I enjoyed a well deserved pint! Haha!
I’m going to go and check out all my pockets now!
Reading this list just made me happy 🙂 I agree with every single one! Well, almost every one as I e.g. never taste your mother’s vegetable pie and I don’t really drink alcohol haha. But thinking about it made me smile ^_^ Have a lovely day!
It’s a fabulous short crust pastry pie! Thanks TJ!
I love pastry pies 🙂 It sounds super tasty!!
It is! I’m hungry now!
Oh gosh! Me too haha! I should run to the kitchen now…
Finding a single McDonald chip in the bottom of the brown bag just before you put it in the bin. 🙂
btw nice to see you back 🙂
Totally agree with that Pete! Ohh, quite fancy a McDonald’s now! And thanks! Feeling a bit better…
Thank you, Tiger is so laid back, he is constantly purring, even when he was getting 2 injections this morning he was purring lol.
iger had an episode the other evening he got off the couch and the his back legs went for a wobble, but I read in a cat with high sugar level their back legs do go funny. I have not had to pay for the vets so far I look after the vets computers and his home ones so I don’t charge him just add the time to my account, just as well because it is expensive, but if you think if we didn’t have the NHS that is about what we would be paying. If you speak to Cats Protection they may help you with vet bills 🙂
I’m going to give them a call. Trouble is, both The Bloke and I work so I’m not sure how much we can get…
It depends on your local CP, I used to be the PR and fund raiser for our local CP and the treasurer was a right tight b%&$h who treated it like her money until I fell out with her and after that we tried and helped everyone. We did have vouchers for getting the snip etc and we was suppose to give them just people on low income, but I used to give them to everyone who had a cat and thats how it should be its not the cats fault who they live with or in the case of the cat who lives with them 🙂
Tiger has to go on a restrictive diet the food is costing us £44 a month but once he has lost weight he can go back onto normal food. He is a big cat anyway as his father was a Scottish wild cat, his brother is big as well but not as big. When we got our puppy Jack Russell he use to walk UNDER tiger lol 🙂
Your very welcome 🙂 I meant to tell you Tiger has been poorly again so back to the vets and I go them to test his blood sugar level and it is high, so he is going on to a weight reducing diet for a month and hopefully it will bring it down. He is a big cat by his genes as well as over eating, he thinks every time we go into the kitchen he gets a treat lol. But will let you know how he gets on. I do hope your baby is better 🙂
Aww I’m sorry to hear that Pete… I hope Tiger recovers soon! Wobbly’s doing ok, but Daisy, the diabetic one, had a hypo the other night so ended up on a drip. She’s better now, but it was quite scary. I think that they are plotting between them to bankrupt me!
*LOVE* this post! I also love #5, #7 and #19. Thanks for the smile. 🙂
Thank you very much!
It all sounds so good… well, maybe not #8, my mother’s cooking is terrible 😉 I’d add the smell of a fresh pot of coffee in the morning, after you get to sleep in late… and perhaps somebody else serves it to you 🙂
That’s a nice thought… Breakfast in bed!
My favorite pleasure is enjoying a cup of coffee without having to rush off to work. Weekend coffee in PJs. Nice to hear from you Suzie.
And you Sandra! That’s a great addition to the list!
What a great list. I’d add a hot chocolate with a splas of Bailey’s. Hope you’re on the mend.
Ooh, or chocolate Baileys… I have a bottle in my fridge that I’m not allowed to touch for a while! Thanks. I’m weak but getting better!
That’s definitely something to look forward to 🙂
Oh yes!
I like #2 on your list 🙂 and my addition would be a nice cup of tea 🙂
Thank you! I’m not a fan of tea, but come from a family of tea drinkers!
Ah, an outlier 🙂
wow… your post really cheered me up! 🙂
Thanks! I’m glad you like it!
Finding £5 in your pocket is THE best. Also, I’m not sure why but all this time I thought you were American? I think it all started when you did a post months ago about California Dreams or Saved by the Bell… It was only after reading your comment about the weather in the UK on Emily’s blog that I realised the error of my ways. And also just now with £ instead of $. Pointless rant over. Carry on.
Even better if that fiver is a tenner! Yes, I’m British… I’m from Manchester but live in Birmingham… I did one on Saved By The Bell last year, so that must have been the one that you read…
That’s a happy post!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Some of them are similar to your lists. If I add another one, it will be ‘Finding and listening to nice songs that make me feel grateful towards the artists who have created such a beautiful tune’.
I really like that!
Regarding your #10, do any men under 50 wear aftershave? Is after shave popular in England. I may have to get some for my trip. My favorite simple pleasure is a good soak in a hot tub in the morning.
Lots of men wear it, but it isn’t the old man ‘Old Spice’ thing you may be thinking of… Phil, you’ve given me an idea… Where are you going in London? Can you give me just a few details?
I love your list of little things! ❤ I would say when my cat kneads on me while she purrs really loud, I love it! It's her way of telling me she loves me…or she wants to murder me! Either way, it's really cute.
I love that too!
Such a great list!
Check twitter when you get a minute, I sent you a picture 🙂
Ooh I’ve been waiting for that!

Reading posts on @suzie81blog
Bit confused… You doing well Richard?
I’m really good. Glad to hear you’re a touch better.
I meant reading your posts is one of my pleasures. 🙂
Aww thanks!
Now rest up and get some chocolate down you.
That’s a good point. I haven’t got any. Thank you for reminding me!
Send the bloke out
Already on it…
I just did number 19 (I don’t get long to savour my victory with three teenagers – it’ll be the Gobi desert again by this time tomorrow). I am a big fan of number one, and number twelve makes my day every time. I love reading a good book in a hot bath, love cheese and wine in front of the telly, and walking on the Cornish coast in winter.
I haven’t walked along the coast in years! We used to go to Tintagel every year with the family…
I love Tintagel, or “Taint- a- gelle”, as my husband calls it.
#6: Those are my favorite! Extra cherries, please. 🙂
In fact, all of these would have made my list. I’d replace #8 with my mother’s homemade chicken and dumplings.
I would add the feeling of a child falling asleep in your arms, the first flowers that bloom when winter is still hanging on, and laying in the sand on a warm beach.
Are you feeling better? I hope so! Your sunny outlook is beautiful, lovely! So glad you had some flowers and a sweet note to brighten your day!
Ooh dumplings. And extra cherries!
I’m getting there, thanks Kaela! The flowers are beautiful, I work with some lovely people!
Fresh flowers. They just make everything brighter!
Absolutely! I don’t get them that gets because the cat eats them, but these flowers are beautiful!
My cat loves lilies…and they are my favorite flowers. Lol so instead I just grow veggies and roses to get my fix.
That’s a nice idea!
Great list! What a fantastic idea. I especially love lying in clean sheets, finding unexpected money, receiving a letter, swimming on a hot day, and the expression of joy when someone is giving a present. Oh goodness. I just like them all!
Similiar to #19…Cleaning an entire room, lighting a candle, and sitting down to admire your work.
7, 16, 17…..I simply can’t pick a favorite. Love them all. Great list….I would add hearing a child giggle and having my dog greet me after a long day.
I love the finding a five pound note in the pocket. This never fails to cheer me up. My simple pleasure is just the right strength coffee, not too much milk and not so hot you can’t take a sip! Rarely happens that all these important building blocks are in place but when it works ahh….
Thanks Suzie, you made me count my blessings today.
The simple pleasure of going outside where there’s fresh air, and taking a deep breath of that air. It just smells and feels right 🙂
I am so, so with you on the freshly made bed. That’s an excellent Number 1!
I love your list (: I would have to say my favorites are #7 and #16 (: And my additions would be:
– Watching the snow fall heavily outside while you’re ticked up by a nice, cozy fire
– Spontaneous visits from good friends
– Spontaneous trips
– Reading your favorite book again because you missed the characters and they welcome you like old friends
– Chocolate 😉
– And random kisses from your pets
Thanks for a wonderful post! I enjoyed it a lot! I hope you feel better very quickly, sending warm hugs and thoughts of chicken noodle soup (:
Cheers!
#20 is so true. I tend to do it with headphones on while I’m doing the hoovering. I swear I sound just like Gary Barlow when I sing along haha. Nice lost!
List even
I hope you are feeling better, getting healed and stronger every day. The gift of flowers with a card from your coworkers was a great pick you up!
You won’t believe this, but almost every idea on this list, is just ‘up my alley,’ including I like amaretto sours (or peach brandy sour), clean linens, finding money and cuddling while watching a movie on the sofa! This was a wonderful and special list, Suzie! We are different ages, but ‘soul sisters!’ Robin
You had me at #1!
I’ve been guilty of number 19. Looking at the refrigerator after you’ve just been food shopping for as long as I can remember, in fact my mother-in law used to say she gonna take a picture of the inside of the refrierator and post it on the front. Excellent post.
The Girl Who Owns My Heart, a black cat purring in my lap, writing, moving someone with my words…
I’m in awe of your ability to think of these. Great!
Nonsensical conversation
The first smell of rain on soil always gets me. Reminds me of growing up in the north of England and unlimited leisure time in the long summer evenings (which we don’t get in Sydney!)
Wonderful post! I’m re blogging it!

What a great post to start your day. Happy Wednesday!
It may sound like a commercial but an ice cold coca-cola after a long ride on my motorcycle. That makes me very happy.
Number 2 on my list is the excitement on your dogs face when you come home from work!!!
Looking into my little dog’s eyes as she looks up adorably at me. 🙂
My favorite little pleasures:
Chocolate
A cup of coffee
Sleeping in on the weekends! 😉
Great stuff Suzie! Have you thought of writing these down and keeping them in a jar? It’s a great way of keeping tabs on the year and staying grateful for the simple things.
What an uplifting post. Sometimes it’s the little things in life that can brighten our day. 🙂

Hi all, after a horrible week here is something that may cheer you up on this cold Sunday afternoon!
Love this! A smile can go a long way to make someone’s day great 🙂
Thank you!
You are very welcome 🙂
The second best pleasure in life is going on a twisty road with my motorbike, right there on the edge…
I’ve never been on a motorbike!
Spot on! This made me smile. I love the refrigerator part.
