I Wanna Know What Love Is… Blog Party and Competition

image

After waiting for nearly two weeks, the day is finally here folks!

Yes, it’s the mahoosive blog party that Steve and I have been getting all excited about, and what a day we have planned – with a blog party, a radio show and a competition to win a huge amount of Organique products, what more could you wish for?

Blog Party

For those of you who have never participated in a blog party before, the rules are simple (PLEASE READ THESE FIRST BEFORE POSTING)…

1. Choose your favourite post from your own blog. The subject of the post can be anything you love (it is Valentine’s Day after all) – blogging, food, parenting, life, travel, thoughts, photography… Note: This should be only one post at a time or it will get sent straight to the ‘spam’ folder and I may not be able to find you for a while. You can share up to three links, and for maximum impact I would suggest that you wait a little while in between posting them rather than in one go. Continue reading

Beauty Blogger Event at Organique

On Thursday night I organised and attended another event at Organique in Birmingham. Those of you who follow the blog regularly will know just how much I love the store and it’s products – it’s only been open since August 2015 and is the only one in the UK, and in my opinion it’s one of the many hidden gems in the city. The products have completely changed the quality and tone of my skin, and I regularly recommend them to all of my family and friends. I was delighted to find that they have recently been nominated for Glamour awards – it’s great to see such a wonderful set of products start to get recognition!

Organique beauty products

Yup, I think it’s turning into an obsession!

Despite going to a number of events over the last year, it’s still an incredibly daunting experience. I attempted to distract myself from my nerves by spending extra time on my hair and make-up (which at the minute I thoroughly enjoy doing anyway), to the point where I was almost late. Want to Detox this January? Go Organique!

A little while ago I organised and attended a blogging event at Organique, my favourite store for natural beauty products in Birmingham. I discovered it in Autumn of 2015, and in my initial visit the manager, Justyna, gave me a consultation and recommended products based on my skin type. I’ve been using them regularly (to be fair, I’m a little obsessed with some of them), and I’ve noticed the quality and tone of my skin has improved immensely in the last few months.

The store has only been open for about six months, and is the only one in the UK, so the event was a great opportunity to introduce local beauty bloggers to the products on offer. I blog about most things, but beauty isn’t one of them (despite my recent obsession with make-up and vlogging tutorials), I was interested to see how experienced beauty bloggers did reviews.

After several weeks of emails, tweets, Facebook invitations, several last minute cancelations and lists, I found myself stood in a group of awesome young women who were all keen to meet and greet and try out the products. Justyna had done some lovely snacks (of which most of them my friend and I ate) and I loved the fact that everybody was chatting and getting to know each other.

What I love about Organique the most is the sheer variety and amount of things on offer, from beautiful salts and bath bombs, to face masks, cleansers, toners, shea butters… It’s a bath-a-holics dream. However, Justyna wanted to particularly focus on the types of masks available and gave demonstrations on how to mix and apply the products effectively. We looked at and tried different types of clay masks, which were fantastic. My favourite in particular was the algae mask, which turned into a rather rubbery consistency after a few minutes and could be simply peeled off after a while, and it left my skin feeling incredible! I also loved the Gold Corundum Peeling Cream (that contains real gold) leaving a shimmer on the skin.

So, as resolutions are being made to change our eating habits and we are more conscious of the things we put into our bodies, why not examine the products we are putting on our skin too?

After the success of the first event, it is likely that a second one will be held later in January – if you are in the West Midlands and want to participate, drop me an email at suzie81blog@hotmail.co.uk or tweet me @suzie81blog and I’ll send you the details.

A Wedding in the Cotswolds

I’ve never been married, but after attending many over the years as a guest or as part of a string quartet, I have a decent idea of the sort of wedding I would like.

Picture this: a Christmas theme, held in a beautiful hotel in the countryside, with lots of candlelight, a simple ceremony and beautiful food, celebrated with a small group of our closest family and friends.

It turns out, one of my oldest and dearest friends, Charlotte and her partner John, clearly have similar tastes, and The Bloke and I have just returned from one of the most stunning weddings we have ever attended. Continue reading

Halloween Blog Party!

Halloween blog partyIt’s Halloween, and while many people are preparing for a party with their loved ones, or getting ready to go trick-or-treating and annoying their neighbours, I thought it would be a fun idea to host a virtual party here in the blogosphere.

For those of you who have never participated in a blog party before, the rules are simple (PLEASE READ THESE FIRST BEFORE POSTING)…

1. Choose your favourite post from your own blog. The subject of the post can be anything you like – blogging, food, parenting, life, travel, thoughts, photography… Note: This should be only one post at a time or it will get sent straight to the ‘spam’ folder and I may not be able to find you for a while. You can share up to three links, and for maximum impact I would suggest that you wait a little while in between posting them rather than in one go.

2. Paste the link in the comment section of this post and feel free to write a little bit about yourself and/or your blog.

3. Enjoy! Relax, pull up a chair, meet new people! Find new blogs, comment on their posts, follow, reblog and share. Let them know that you met them here!

The party will be going on for the next 24 hours, and you can visit as many people as you like. You don’t have to follow my blog or social media accounts to participate (although you’re always welcome to!) and you’re very much allowed to reblog and share this post so you can invite your friends!

Organique Birmingham

Organique Birmingham

I’ve lived in Birmingham since 2001 and now consider myself to be an honorary Brummie and I absolutely love the variety of things to see and do, and the places available to shop in the city. However, what I particularly enjoy is finding the amazing smaller, independent businesses that offer a more personal touch and artisan products, and I was pleased to discover a wonderful store in the North Western Arcade, Temple Row last week.

Organique is a natural, environmentally friendly and healthy cosmetics store, specialising in beauty products that are safe and made from naturally based sources. As someone with extremely sensitive skin, I was intrigued by their products and was delighted when I was invited in to test some of them.

I fell in love with the store immediately – for anyone with an interest in beauty and skin care this is a haven where many hours can easily be spent browsing through the hundreds of different products on offer. I had a consultation with the manager, Justyna, in which we discussed my skin type and what I wanted to achieve from a skin care routine, and then I was very genererously presented with a number of items in which she recommended I try over the next week.

I have started by focusing on changing my routine on my face and arms. The skin on my face is the ultimate combination – extremely sensitive, dry and blotchy in places, greasy and spotty in others. Gorgeous. I have to be careful when using cleansers, toners and moisturisers as they often cause break outs, and even the most expensive products have caused my skin to react badly in the past. Justyna recommended two products for this in particular:

Melon Ritual Face Mask

Melon Ritual Face Mask

The Melon Ritual Face Mask (£12.95) immediately appealed to me because it smelled gorgeous. It was a light texture and felt lovely when applied. I used it three times over the week, as recommended, leaving it on my clean, dry face for twenty minutes, before rinsing with water. Amazing. I noticed an immediate improvement in the quality of tone in my skin, appearing brighter and feeling refreshed.

Rejuvenating Cranberry Serum

Rejuvenating Cranberry Serum

The Rejuvenating Cranberry Serum (£17.50) is designed for skin which is tired and lacking in energy. It was easy and quick to use – being massaged gently into the skin after washing and drying. It smelled lovely, it wasn’t greasy or thick and it genuinely left my face feeling soft and smooth. Better still, I found that some of the dryer parts of my skin were moisturised, and I didn’t have a single break out all week. It will definitely be replacing my regular moisturiser from now on.

Habibi Shea Butter Body Balm

Habibi Shea Butter Body Balm

I also suffer from mild psoriasis, particularly in the winter, which leaves me with patches of flaky, itchy skin on my arms. Nice. For this, I decided to try the Habibi Shea Butter Body Balm (£7.95), and it’s one of the best products I’ve ever used. Seriously. It smells wonderful, with a slightly masculine fragrance, and all I have done is washed, exfoliated and rubbed a small amount of the butter into my arms. My skin looks and feels absolutely wonderful, the condition has improved and it’s an absolute bargain at the price.

I’ve got a number of products still to test, which I will be doing so and posting about over the coming weeks (I know, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it), and I highly recommend that you get yourself over to the store so that you can try them too.

Need more reasons?

  • You can choose any selection of any products and have them put into a beautiful gift box. Perfect for birthdays, weddings and, of course, Christmas.
  • Products are suitable for men, women and children.
  • There are lots of products that are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Once a product is finished, you can bring the tub back to the store and get it refilled for £1.00 less.
  • There is a 10% discount for students on certain products (ask in store).

Wordless Wednesday: La Sagrada Familia

Ok, it isn’t totally wordless… The Bloke and I spent the afternoon at La Sagrada Familia, and despite the fact that neither of us have any religious beliefs, we were quite emotional about the sheer beauty of it…

What Happened When The Bloke Did My Makeup…

imageDespite having the general fashion sense of a teenage boy, I’ve recently developed a minor obsession with makeup. I’ve always worn it, and have an extensive collection of high street products, but my general makeup routine evolves around the basics. On rare occasions I’ll go all out for a night out, but it isn’t something I’ve ever really been concerned with. I totally blame N – she’s got an amazing sense of style and has talked about her favourite vloggers on numerous occasions, so a little while ago I decided to check out a post or two on YouTube. How Not To Do a Photography Shoot

imageIt was a long day yesterday.

My friend and I participated in a photo shoot – we had been stopped in the centre of Birmingham last month and offered a promotion (at a huge discount) for a new photography studio that had recently opened. As part of the package, there was champagne, a hand massage, manicure, professional make-up and hair and an hour long photography session, with a free photograph at the end and the opportunity to purchase further prints if we liked them.

We were excited, but a little apprehensive – neither of us had experienced anything similar before and didn’t know what to expect. However, we did as we were asked and arrived with some of our favourite outfits, no make-up and natural hair.

I’m not one for complaining when I go out – after years of working in various jobs within the service industry I know how awkward, demanding and rude the general public can be – so I always try and be as polite as possible. However, if I had paid the price that they are usually charging for the package that we had I would be demanding my money back, and then some. While I’m not going to go into too much detail, I want you to imagine that a couple of students woke up one day, hired out a couple of tiny rooms in one of the roughest areas of the city and employed their mate with an SLR camera to take pictures. The studio wasn’t a new one – the company ‘opening’ this new place had in fact arranged some sort of deal with an already existing, run down business.

My make-up artist was very inexperienced, and despite asking lots of questions about the sort of style and colours I liked she completely ignored everything I had said and proceeded to make me look like Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Batman, sticking bright red lipstick on me and putting one of my false eyelashes much higher than the other, which I then discreetly adjusted and improved in the toilet afterwards. Don’t believe me? This was the before and after…

It’s amazing what your own make-up, toilet lighting and Instagram can do isn’t it!

image

The saving grace of the day was my friend. I’ve known her for a long time, and she’s one of my favourite people. Neither of us were happy with the service we received, but she put a brave face on it and kept me feeling positive throughout the day. She’s a much stronger character then I am, which I was grateful for as she politely put the photographer firmly in his place when he was inexplicably aggressive with us when we first walked in. To be fair, by the end of the shoot he was laughing and joking with us, and we were making each other laugh by pulling silly faces at each other and after a while I was able to relax and enjoy myself. She’s a glamorous woman and was a natural, taking things in her stride and striking different poses in the beautiful outfits she had brought with her.

After waiting for quite a while after the shoot, we were given the opportunity to look through our photographs. I have huge body confidence and anxiety issues and I while I wasn’t expecting the camera to remove 60lbs from my frame, I was hoping for images that would make me feel a little more confident about myself. It had the opposite effect – the angles in most of the pictures actually made me look bigger than I am, and I was completely deflated. I did purchase a few of them (after lots of bartering as they initially attempted charge an extortionate amount of money for them), mainly because my friend looks great, but there was only one of me that I thought was ok. Here’s one of us together that I liked – we look like we are auditioning for the new series of The Apprentice…

image

I’m not going to include many of the pics, but this was the one that I originally liked. Unfortunately, when I got home and put it on my tv screen (which was much bigger), it looked totally different than during the viewing process. There’s a few issues that bug me… My left eye (which looks totally black) and The Hand. The poor lighting looks like a random person has shoved their arm in front of my face. The more I look at it, the more I hate it. It’s a dead hand.

image

I tried to experiment and cut it down, even adding an idea for a potential logo, asked for advice in Instagram and from my bloggy friend Steve, who is good at graphics and design, and The Bloke went to work on Photoshop, but it still annoys me.

image

Stupid dead hand.

However, it was an experience. I enjoyed spending time with a good friend and we had a laugh.

And the next time someone asks me to go and try out a new photography business, I’ll save my money and take more pictures in the toilet instead!

What about you? Have you ever received any poor services or had your expectations dashed?

Accepting Average

image

Six weeks ago a friend and I were walking down the main high street in Birmingham, when we were stopped by someone who was promoting a new photography studio that had just opened in the city. After a conversation, we came to a deal that involved a makeover and photography day for us both, complete with champagne and various treatments at an enormous discount. Since then, we’ve had the date firmly booked into our calendars and we’ve been looking forward to it.

Until today, that is.

The shoot is tomorrow. It is rare that I will discuss issues of body confidence unless it focuses on the positive, but today I had to choose a series of outfits to take with me, and the whole process left me feeling totally deflated.

I’m not fashionable or fashion conscious, and never have been. I prefer to spend my time in sweaters and tracksuits bottoms in my spare time, my hair is scraped back on the top of my head and the last time I put any effort into applying make up was in March for my friend’s birthday. My reflection in the mirror today was quite a sorry state – my hair hasn’t been cut for about two years, I have never had a manicure and my eyebrows are beginning to take over my face.

On an average day, this doesn’t necessarily bother me – I have a busy and often stressful life and have better things to worry about than whether my nails are painted. I tell myself that I’m an average woman and I am comfortable with that. However, the process of getting ready today reminded me of how many beautiful clothes I can no longer fit into – my favourite dresses won’t go past my thighs, jackets won’t fit on my arms, and once baggy tops are now tight, revealing the gut that has steadily appeared over the last five years.

It has served as a reminder of just how much I have let myself go. Having to stand in fromt of a camera tomorrow (even when there is champagne involved) is one of the most daunting things I have experienced in a while. It has made me realise that I’m accepting average, and I deserve far more than that.

What about you – do you like what you see in your reflection? Are you open about body confidence issues with your loved ones?
