A Cat in a Hat and a Drunken Tree

imageAfter enviously seeing some of my neighbours Christmas decorations over the last few days, I took the opportunity this morning to finally decorate the tree and front room.

We’ve had the same tree for years – a cheap and artificial Argos purchase – and it’s been with us through three house moves. The decorations initially started off as one silver bauble set, lights and some tinsel that we bought with the tree, but every year we have added to it with things we have purchased on our travels, resulting in a mishmash of glass stars, little pottery santas, Beatrix potter characters, wooden snowflakes and gingerbread figures. People with design ideals and OCD would have a minor panic attack. Continue reading

A Girly Weekend

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a while.

Through the Annual Bloggers Bash, I’ve made several new friends that have developed to the point where we all communicate daily – a thread on Twitter turned into a continuous conversation that has seen us through the highs and lows of daily lives. We’ve regularly commented that we wished our houses were nearer to each other, but the other week we decided to do something about it and organise a meet-up. As a result, I found myself on a train to London this morning, preparing to navigate my way through the tube for the first time by myself and looking forward to the first girly weekend that I’ve had in a while.

As always, the train was rammed and I was lucky that I ended up sitting next to a nice girl who was on her way home after a trip to Birmingham. There were various conversations going on throughout the carriage – buying a fireguard to protect a grandchild, a child who felt travel sick and, of course, theories about future world catastrophes following the US election. There were lots of big words being thrown around, including ‘isolanistic’ (I’m not even sure if that’s a real word to begin with) and I was regretting not bringing my headphones as wasn’t something I wanted to listen to all the way to London. Blog of the Day: Shank You Very Much

blog

Meet Heather!

Heather is the creator of Shank You Very Much. I like her About page (and the adorable picture of her dog!).

I am a person filled with sarcasm and it makes its appearance at the most inopportune times. I’ve been likened to a Seinfeld character, which is unsurprising since that show literally shaped my childhood. Every Thursday through the late eighties and early nineties, you knew where to find me. Blog of the Day: Fattymccupcakes

imageMeet Fattymccupcakes! It’s certainly a name that makes me smile, and let’s face it, anything with the word ‘cupcake’ involved is always going to be good.

Normally, I like to use the description that a blogger has written about themselves in their About page within my own introduction, and hers is succinct and to the point:

I’m just trying to find the balance between eating all the cupcakes and not getting any fatter. That is all.

Aren’t we all?! Continue reading

Lego, Steak and Waiting for the Mailman

It’s The Bloke’s birthday today, and before midday I had a bit of a bad start to the morning. While he isn’t particularly bothered about his own birthday, I like to make a fuss because he looks after me all year and I was a bit frustrated because his presents hadn’t arrived in the mail yet. I also managed to forget my purse when I went to the shop and then I burnt his birthday bacon butty, so combined with the fact that I was looking out of the window every five seconds for the postman it wasn’t exactly the day that I had planned. Guest Post: Ben’s Bitter Blog

toucan punI never had a sense of humor growing up. Well, I did, but it was never really realized until college. As fun as high school was, college is where I met my real friends. My real friends taught me how to meet, talk to, ask out and kiss girls. They taught me how to study, how to party, and how to laugh.  But most of all, they taught me that I had a sense of humor. I was educated in razor sharp wit. I was taught how to tell a funny story, how to make a good comeback and how to be witty. I got so good at having a witty comeback for everything, that when I went home for Christmas, my parents said, “Wow, college has taught you to be so mean!” Continue reading

Penis Balloons

I’m slightly concerned about the search engine terms I’ll receive after this, but I couldn’t resist…

I have two house cats that are getting quite old. One of them has Type 1 diabetes, and needs twice daily insulin injections to make sure that her blood sugars are regulated. Consequently, whenever I go away, I need someone to administer her medication, as putting her in a cattery would be too stressful. Luckily, I have a wonderful friend who looks after them for me, and she very kindly agreed to be on cat-sitting duty while The Bloke and I went to Scotland for a week.

All week, she’s been sending me pics via Facebook messenger to ease my worry on how they were. As we were driving back, she sent me a message to ask what time we would arrive home. It was an exhausting trip, and The Bloke and I were incredibly relieved to be back.

We opened the front door and walked in to this… Continue reading

Guest Post: Susie Lindau’s Wild Ride!

susie lindau's head on fly

I’m a fly on the wall at Suzie’s place today.

First of all, we have the best names in the world, right? Thanks so much for allowing me to invade your personal space. I am very excited to be here.

When I won Suzie’s guest post opportunity it was as if she handed me a microphone and pointed me in the direction of a podium. I imagined myself on stage, blinded by footlights while the audience remained in shadow. A few coughs would let me know they had come to be entertained, but what the heck would I say up there on my soapbox? I’m more of a casual, sit on the couch and have a conversation, kind of girl. So I’m relaxing on her overstuffed chintz sofa today.

By the way, Suzie has very nice digs. Roomy, great views, stocked fridge… I might stick around for a while. Ah! She left me a pot of tea. I’ll add some ice and lemonade and make myself a very American, Arnold Palmer. Oh! Shortbread cookies. Yum. Continue reading

‘What I Shoped’ – Unusual (and Baffling) Search Engine Terms

imageSEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is a big thing in the blogging world, and I’ve read a number of posts about how to use it to increase traffic to the blog. Over the last few years I have started to get a large amount of referrals from search engines, and I love seeing the sorts of things that people have typed in and stumbled across my blog as a result.

Some, I can explain, because I know that a few of my posts are on the first page of Google. For my post ‘23 Things You Should Do Before You’re 23,‘ which still remains as one of my most popular, I often receive things like ‘things to do before 23,’ or ‘What should I do before my 23rd?’. For ‘Nine Things That We Don’t Owe Anyone,’ I get terms like ‘I don’t owe you,’ or ‘things I shouldn’t owe people.’ Recently, with the ‘Trigglypuff‘ saga taking the internet by storm, I have received lots of terms with Trigglypuff mentioned.

However, it’s becoming more frequent that I am finding sentences that make me wonder what on earth I have been writing over the last three years. I’ve always considered this blog to be at a PG rating, with only one or two references made to adult content. However, it’s clear that a large amount of my search terms are focused on these references, so at this point I’d like to warn you that the content of the rest of this post may get a little rude… You may wish to read some of it peeking out through your fingers. Or avoid eating…
